Biotechnology in Conservation Flashcards
what are 3 uses of GMO’s in conservation
- Bioremediation
- control of vectors
- control of feral pests
what is bioremediation
Bioremediation refers to a process employed for removing environmental pollutants from air, water and more.
what is an example of bioremediation
GMO bacteria can break down oil spills and remove heavy metals from soil or water contamination sites
how do GMOs allow vectors to be controlled
A vector can be inserted into a genetically modified organism to transfer DNA sequences to combat against or cause advantageous changes.
what is en example of vectors being controlled
Genetically modied mosquitos containing a lethal gene have been developed in order to combat the spread of denague fever.
what is an example of GMOs for controlling feral pests
A naturally occurring gene blocks fertilisation in rabbits. This gene is isolated and added to the myxomatosis virus. This virus is inserted into a rabbit’s gene to affect others causing them to not be able to fertlise.
