Fungi Flashcards
1
Q
What is fungi?
A
They can be unicellular but are mostly multicellular. They have a cell wall made up of chitin.
2
Q
List 5 structural features of fungi.
A
- Are eukaryotic cell structures with membrane-bound organelles.
- Cell wall made of chitin.
- Are unicellular or multicellular.
- Reproduce by spores.
- Can be made up of filaments (hyphae)
3
Q
What are the 2 effects of fungi?
A
- Mostly external.
- Inflammation and irritation of skin.
4
Q
What is one example of a fungus?
A
- Chytridiomycosis.
5
Q
What is the invasion method of chytridiomycosis?
A
Enters the skin.
6
Q
What is the transmission method of chytridiomycosis?
A
Indirect - waterborne free due to swimming zoospores or contact with contaminated water.
Direct - contact between infected individuals.
7
Q
List 4 symptoms of chytridiomycosis.
A
- Thickening of the skin affects gas exchange and osmoregulation.
- Excessive shivering.
- Sitting out in the open.
- Lethargic.
8
Q
Outline the 4 steps of the life cycle of chytridiomycosis.
A
- Single-celled flagellated zoospore enters the skin cells.
- Thallus forms.
- New zoospores are produced in the thallus as it matures through asexual reproduction.
- Zoospores are released into water where they swim to find a new host.
