Q

what are short tandem repeats (STRs)

A

STRs are sections of non-coding DNA that are repeated in the DNA. They are multiple loci and are used to compare.

Q

what are the four steps of the genetic fingerprinting process

A
  1. Extract DNA from a sample
  2. STRs cut into sections using restriction enzymes
  3. Amplifiied using PCR

Q

what are the five steps of gel electrophoresis?

A
  1. Restriction enzymes cut up DNA
  2. A fluorescent dye is added to samples
  3. Samples are added to the wells in the gel at the negative electrode end
  4. Electricity is run through the gel and the negatively charged DNA is attracted to the positive electrode
  5. DNA is viewed under UV light which causes it to be fluoresce
