Artificial Selection Flashcards
What is artificial selection?
Is a form of genetic engineering and is the selection by humans of animals or plants with desirable phenotypes for breeding to produce offspring with desirable characteristics.
What does artificial selection cause?
Causes changes in allele frequency of the gene pool and therefore decreases biodiversity and a smaller gene pool.
How else is artificial selection known?
Selective breeding
What is interbreeding depression?
Is the reduced biological fitness in a given population as a result of interbreeding or breeding of related individuals.
What are 5 desirable traits humans may use artificial selection for?
- Disease resistance
- Faster growth rate
- Improved quality yield
- Improved yield
- Tolerance to adverse conditions
What are 4 examples of artificial selection?
- Any modern agricultural product
- Sheep and cows
- Fruits and vegetables
- Grains
What are the 5 steps of artificial selection?
- Identify the desirable traits
- Choose the parents with the desired traits
- The selected offspring are then crossbred to produce offspring that inherit the desirable traits.
- The offspring are evaluated, and the individuals with the most desirable traits are selected as parents for the next generation.
- This process is repeated over several generations until the desired trait is consistently present in the population.
