Models of Memory Flashcards
Start by reading the Sperling 1960 case -plss
DO IT OR UR KNEECAPS WILL SUFFER
What does Sperling’s study suggest
Theoretically participants should have been able to remember 4 items from a row, however approximately only 3 were remembered
This suggests that sensory memory cannot hold info for long
Info decays rapidly in the sensory store
What was the Glanzer and Cunitz 1966 study
Showed participants a list of 20 words, presented one at a time and then asked them to recall
Called the serial position effect
“When asking ppl to remember a list of words which is greater than the capacity of short term memory they have a tendency to remember words from the beginning and end of the list”
Describe the primary and recency effect of the Glanzer and Cunitz 1966 study
Primary - “tendency for people to remember the first 5 of so words from the beginning of the list” (LT)
Recency - “tendency for people to remember the last 5 or so words from the end of the list” (ST)
What does Atkinson and Shiffrin 1968’s multi store model of memory

Long-term memory (LTM)
yes those were makeshift arrows ur very welcome <3
listen here ik this is confusing i have a pic on my phone just frickin look at that and move on my efforts r not appreciated
How does Glanzer and Cunitz 1966 support the MSM
Primary effect - 1st words are best rehearsed and transferred to LTM
Recency effect - these are last words to be presented. Therefore they are fresh and in STM at start of recall
Therefore supports STM store and importance of rehearsal
What is the working memory model
smth zaid couldnt memorise 4 the life of him
now go ask elishka 4 the picture u lil shi
What is the central executive
Key component in working memory model
Directs attention to tasks
Decides what working memory pays attention to
e.g. driving and talking. rather than hitting cyclist who is wobbling all over the bloody place, stop talking shi and concentrate
congrats
u now have a license x
What is the phonological loop
Part of working memory model
Has a limited capacity
Deals w auditory info and preserves word order (inner ear)
Tis the 1st slave system
What did Baddeley do in 1986 w phonological loop
Further subdivided it into
-Phonological store = holds words heard
-Articulatory process = holds words heard/seen and silently repeated (looped) like an inner voice. This is a kind of maintenance rehearsal
Now, what is this visuo-spatial sketch pad
Stores visual and/or spatial info
It is ur inner eye
Visual = what shi looks like
Spatial = relationship between things
Has a limited capacity
this is the 2nd slave system
What did Logie 1995 suggest about visuo-spatial sketch pad
Subdivision
-Visuo-cache (store)
-Inner scribe for spatial relations
What is the 3rd slave system and what can u tell me about it
well hopefully smth
Episodic buffer
-Limited capacity
-Wasn’t added to working memory model until year 2000. NOT MUCH HAS CHANGED BUT THEY LIVE UNDERWATER
-has a general store
What is sensory register
Stimulus from the environment
Several stores - one for each of our lil senses how considerate
Iconic - visual info is coded visually
how iconic
Echoic - sounds or auditory info is coded acoustically
me, however, am coded autistically
How is memory stored according to the MSM
Memory is a series of 3 separate stores
Attention and rehearsal explain how info flows through the memory stores
