Minerals to Metals Part 9 Flashcards
What is brass used to make?
Doorknobs, buttons and musical instruments
How is solder used in electronics?
To attach components to circuit boards
Why does alloying pure gold make it available to use in jewellery?
Pure gold is fairly soft and alloying it makes it hard enough to use in jewellery
What is the strength of steel and what can it be used for?
Stronger than pure iron, can be used from bridges to saucepans
What is a shape memory alloy?
A type of smart material made from metals that returns to its original shape after being deformed
What is an example of a shape memory alloy and what are its uses?
Nitinol, which is made from nickel and titanium, can be used to make a pair of glasses that do not break and to hold broken bones into place while they heal
Which metal has the highest and lowest cost?
Gold has the highest cost and iron has the lowest cost
Which metal has the highest and lowest annual production?
Iron has the highest annual production and gold has the lowest annual production
Which metals has the highest and lowest density?
Gold has the highest density and aluminium has the lowest density
Which metal has the highest and lowest melting points?
Nickel has the highest melting point and tin has the lowest melting point
Which metal is the best heat/electricity conductor and which metals is the worst?
Silver is the best heat/electricity conductor and lead is the worst
What is the difference in properties in alloys and elements that compose them?
Alloys melt at lower temperatures but are harder than elements
What is an interstitial alloy?
When the atoms added are much smaller than the atoms in the network, they can fit into the holes between the layers of atoms in the network
Why is copper used more than silver?
It is cheaper and more readily available
What type of metal would boat transport make use of?
A low density metal such as aluminium, because it is of a lower density than water
