Minerals to Metals Part 10 Flashcards
What are the location of ore deposits related to and why?
The reactivity series, because highly reactive metals form soluble salts that dissolve in the ocean whereas un reactive metals are found native
What is the order of common metals from highest reactivity to lowest?
Potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, aluminium, zinc, iron, tin, lead, copper, silver, gold, platinum
What are the metals above carbon in the reactivity series?
Potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium and aluminium
What is calcium found as?
Carbonates in limestone
What does magnesium form?
Silicates in rocks
What are aluminium, zinc and iron found as?
Oxides in rocks
What are tin, lead and copper found as?
Sulphides in volcanic regions
What are gold, silver and platinum found as?
Native as unreacted elements which do not need to be extracted
Which metals react with cold water?
Potassium, sodium and calcium
Which metal reacts with hot water?
Magnesium
Which metal is protected by its oxide layer when reacting with water?
Aluminium
Which metals react with steam?
Zinc and iron
Which metals react slowly with stream
Tin and lead
Which metals do not react with water?
Copper, silver, gold and platinum
Which metals have a violent reaction with dilute HCL?
Potassium, sodium and calcium
