Immunology Part 5 Flashcards
What is incubation?
The time in which the host has been infected but shows no symptoms of disease
How do parasites gain nutrition from their hosts?
Browsing on the surface, feeding on blood and tissues, absorbing nutrients across a body wall
How have parasites adapted over time?
They no longer possess the systems of the body that they do not require
How do pathogens cause disease in the body?
Disturbing the host’s metabolism, interfering with the host’s immune system, disrupting the production of toxins and enzymes
What do viruses do to cells?
Take over cellular mechanisms and program the cell to make copies of itself
What are the physical characteristics of viruses?
Sub-cellular, nuclear material inside a protein coat
What are the physical characteristics of fungi?
Eukaryotic, spread threads to devour food by releasing enzymes on to the surface and absorbing nutrients
What are the physical characteristics of arthropods?
Six legs, segmented body, often possess sucking mouth parts, may act as vectors for other parasites
What are the physical characteristics of worms?
Segmented/unsegmented, macroscopic/microscopic, many have hooks or suckers
What are the physical characteristics of protozoa?
Eukaryotic, single-celled, aquatic organisms
What are the physical characteristics of prions?
Abnormal proteins
What are the physical characteristics of bacteria?
Prokaryotic, have a cell wall, have one circular chromosome, possess ribosomes
What are some examples of arthropods?
Ticks, mosquitoes, lice
What are some examples of worms?
Tape worms, blood flukes, liver flukes
What are some examples of protozoa?
Malaria, sleeping sickness
