migration 2.2.1 - globalisation Flashcards
Define Globalisation
The increasing interconnection of the worlds economical, cultural and political systems
The flows of capital information
commodities, tourists and migration
What does TCT stand for
transport, communication and trade

List and explain the flows of movement that drive globalisation
These flows of movements are driven by Globalisation and it’s ability to connect economies through trade, tech and finiancial markets
1.CAPITAL (money)-this is the volume of foreign exchange worlwide, where free market liberalisation has played a major role in undertaking international trade in financial services.
2.INFORMATION (tech)- rapidly increased global data flows since 1990s leading to growth in social media as well as faster broadband for netflix
3.COMMODITIES (trade of food/ resources)- This exceeded $25 trill in value, because of the rapid development of emerging economies (e.g. China, India, Indonesia) as a result increases the global middle class because of industrial demand
4.TOURISTS- China generates the most expenditure, and then Europe receives most tourists
5.MIGRATION- migrating internationally for work or survival
Explain how connections between people and places have deepened
Globalisation has led to connections between people becoming deep, because in everyday life people are becoming more globally connected
Explain how connections between people and places have lengthened
Globalisation has led to people’s ability to tour across the country
And created ships that have the ability to ship products greater distances
Explain how connections between people and places have shortened (sped up)
Shortened due to technology as you can communicate via face-time or travelling on planes to go across the world in less that 2 days.
Positive impact on international migrants as they are more aware or how to get to another country quickly
Define the three types of globalisation
Economic Globalisation- is the ability to trade with other countries, and have less boundaries of trade
Social Globalisation- social media is used so people across borders can discuss
Political Globalisation- now there’s political co-operation between countries

List the three main reasons for Globalisation
- Improved communication
- improved transport
- free trade agreements
Explain how improved Communications helps to create globalisation
Improving communication helps TNCs to operate across the world and then the development of satellites, improved communication to enable people to watch several TV channels
Explain how improved Transport helps to create globalisation
Improving the efficiency and size of container ships so they transport commodities faster
Explain how improved Free-Trade agreements helps to create globalisation
The free trade agreement has made trading easier by reducing restrictions of import and export as well as not being able to put taxes and tariffs on foreign products
What are the two features that drive globalisation more
- New markets
- the growth of TNC’s
How do New markets drive globalisation further
To drive globalisation further, New markets allow opening of global trade in countries with populous markets e.g. India and China which encourages businesses to invest money to generate new sales
How does the growth of TNCs drive globalisation further
To drive globalisation further, the growth of TNCs e.g. McDonalds allows the TNCs to produce goods and services and then sell these products on a mass scale
2.2.1 b
define Migration
define immigration
define emigration
migration is the movement of people from one place to another
immigration is the movement of people to a country
emigration is the movement of people from a country
What does Time-space compression mean in relation to globalisation
Due to globalisation (increased tech, transport:airplanes and communication: internet )- time space compression is when there’s a reduced perception of how far away a country is, because of how interconnected the world feels
What does distanced decay mean in relation to globalisation
Distance decay is as the distance between two country increases, their interactions and inter-connectivity decreases. However, the increase of globalisation has reduced distance decay massively because of improved transport and communication through technology such as the internet
list the 3 factors that different types of migrants depend on
- Length of stay
- The distance traveled
- reasons for movement
There are two migrant classifications in the distance traveled
- Internal Migration which is moving within the boundaries of the same country
- International migration which is moving from one country to another
There are two migrant classifications in the length of stay
- Temporary migration is when the migrants intend to return to the source area some time in the future
- Permanent migration is when the migrants intend to stay in the receiving area and not go back to the source area
There are two migrant classifications in the reasons for movement
- Voluntary migration which occurs when people move out of a country out of choice, often motivated by economic factors
- Forced migration is when people have no choice but to leave there country (they are known as refugees)
why is quantification of migration so hard to keep track of
define quantifying
quantifying is counting and locating migrants
It is hard to keep track of because of the large volume of illegal migrants and the lack of border control, especially in large countries
what is more common inter-regional and intra-regional migration
inter regional migration is more common because it easier to migrate within a region, and intra-regional is less common as it is harder to get there (friction distance)
define friction distance
it is when there’s reduced chance of migration because of the vast distance, and it takes along time which costs money
list the 6 intervening obstacles that make migration a challenge, which you can put in an essay when talking about what hinders migration
- distance
- time
- cost of it
- physical geography
- employment opportunities
- cultural differences
globalisation has helped to overcome 3 of these intervening obstacles, explain how
globalisation has helped to overcome: distance, cost and time due to improved transport, communications and media portrayal
