MicroBioFinal - HemmorhagicFever Flashcards

1
Q

disease agent

A

Ebola Virus

  • filamentus virus: enveloped (protein coat looks like pretzel), negative sense RNA, RNA transcriptase, release by budding
  • replicate in macrophages, endothelial cells (on every organ), epithelial cells (skin)

Q

disease agent (viral replication)

A
  1. attatchment
  2. penetration - everything gets in but envelope
  3. uncoating
  4. biosyntheses - RNA polymerase copies (-) sense RNA into (+) sense RNA which is used by the ribosomes of the host cell to produce more virus parts
  5. assembly and maturation
  6. release by budding

Q

transmission

A
  • stable at room temperature for days
  • contact with respiratory secretions: indirect fomite (possibly contact aersol)
  • can get from saliva, sweat, tears: direct contact
  • has to get in to your nose, mouth, eyes

Q

symptoms

A
  • 3 day incubation
  • 4 day prodromal symptoms: headache, fever, malaise, myalgia
  • 3-4 day disease symptoms - liquify organs:then blooody diarrhea, bleed from eyes& nose, skin fills with bloody boils
  • around day 4 DEATH OCCURS = 90% death rate

Q

prevention

A
  • avoid transmission: wear BSI, disinfect, wash hands, quarantine
  • avoid host: current guess is bats b/c they carry large amounts of RNA viruses (high mutation rate)
