Meteorology Today, Ahrens Chap 10 Flashcards

1
Q

What is a hadley cell

A

Single cell model where earth is uniformly covered by water and sun shines directly on the equator. Leads to high pressure at poles and low pressure at equators, which circulate the air

Q

What is the 3 cell model

A

Generally accepted model used today, where from the equator to the Subtropics is a Hadley Cell(Cold air from Subtropics circulate to the warm air at the tropics), the subtropics to the subpolar areas is a Ferrel Cell(Air from Subtropical Highs blow into the Subpolar low ) and the Subpolar areas to the Poles is a Polar Cell(Polar Highs to Subpolar lows)

Q

What is the Intertropical Convergence zone

A

Where the Northeast Trade Winds Converge with the Southeastern ones. Usually lies near the equator

6
Q

What are the trade winds

A

Winds caused by the Hadley cell that direct air from the Subtropical highs to the Equatorial low, where it is deflected to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere

Q

What are the Westerlies

A

Winds caused by Ferrell cell that direct air from Subtropical highs to Subpolar lows.

Q

As you go up in the troposphere, what happens to wind speeds

A

Increases, because the pressure gradient between the warm air and the cold air increases with height
