MEDIA REPRESENTATION: AGE 2 Flashcards
childhood: Knowles
did a content analysis of children tv shows/entertainment
found:chilren are motivated most often by peer relationships and romance, never shown childnre grappling with important issues, anti social behaviours= positive result for the characters, children from ethnic bg under rep
childhood knows: conclusion:
so media representations contain a number of stereotypes and entertainment programming reflects an adult perspective on children rather than their interests and concerns, good children are led astray by others or are victims of crime
childhood: aries point
media is able too coitally construct what childhood is, what it means to be a child
childhood Aries; STUDY
studied paintings form the Middle Ages and found children treated as mature adults with the same work
by 1900, media represent childhood as a time of innocence and vunrabiility and some soc take this further arguing media portrays children and peferect angles downplaying their individuality and problems they cause.
however, tv shows such as super nanny show children as troublesome poorly behaved
young people/teens
Wayne et al point
media portays teens as mostly neg by criminsling them assosotiiang them with crimes and violence and rarely allowing them to express their opinion on the news, nor focus on teen issues like teens mental health
yong people/ teens
Wayne et al study
did a content analysis of 130 news items across main tv channels in 2006 looking at news representations,
82% focuses on youth as a victim or perpetrator of crime
1% of all sources of interveiws/opnion
Wayne et al conclusion
so this shows media didn’t talk to young people about the issues and stories that affect them and ignores stories how young people are effected by social issues eg mods and rockers moral panic Cohen
elderly williams and Lianne
elderly people are underrepresented but when they are shown they fit a stereotype.
anaylsed 5years worth of advertisement in 121 magazines, they found the most common rep of elderly was ‘golden agers’>old people as active, enjoying life and any other representiaosn was them as great grandparents and wise
elderly: neg stereotype
neg stereotypes where less common as 9.8% who were portrayed as incompetent
though their are neg portrayals, they can see the media slowing re inventing how they deal with the elderly in order to make them consumer mroe producers as they have the most displosbaile income to spend on consumer goods (Blake)
