Which way do magnetic fields go?
North to south
What is a magnetic field?
An area surrounding a magnet that can exert a force on magnetic material
What materials can magnetic fields work through?
Any non-metal
How do you magnetise a metal?
Stroking it with a magnet several times
What materials are magnetic?
Nickel, iron, steel, cobalt
What is an electromagnet?
When an electric current passes through a coil of wire, the coil has a magnetic field around it
How do you increase the strength of an electromagnet?
Putting a magnetic object through it. Increasing the current, making more coil
What are some uses of electromagnets?
Hover trains - same poles to repel each other and hover, scrap yards - pick up magnetic metals to separate materials
What are some advantages of electromagnets?
Can be switched on and off, strength can be controlled, reduces friction making it faster
How do electromagnets work?
The button completes the circuit is switched on. This activates the electromagnet. It attracts the iron bar. The hammer hits the gong. The contact is parted which disconnect the circuits the electromagnet is no longer activated. The metal springs back and reconnects the circuit
