What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Oxygen + glucose —> carbon dioxide + water (+ energy)
What is gas exchange?
The movement of oxygen from the alveoli into the blood and the movement of carbon dioxide from the blood into the alveoli
What are alveoli?
Millions of tiny air sacs found in the lungs
Where do we get oxygen from for respiration?
The alveoli (gas exchange)
Where do we get glucose from for respiration?
The villi (digestion)
What is respiration?
A chemical reaction that releases energy in all the cells in the body
How does gas exchange happen? (What process)
Diffusion
What are the qualities of alveoli and capillaries that make respiration so easy?
Big surface area to allow more oxygen to pass through. Thin walls so oxygen has less distance to travel so that respiration can happen quicker.
What is diffusion?
Particles moving from a highly concentrated area to a less concentrated area
What are the 4 different parts of the heart?
Right atrium, left atrium, right ventricle, left ventricle - (atrium at the top)
What are the parts of the lungs?
Bronchus, bronchioles, diaphragm, rib cage, alveoli, trachea
What does the diaphragm do?
It is a muscle that helps us breathe. When we inhale, the diaphragm uncurves allowing the lungs to expand with air
How does the heart help respiration?
The heart gives the red blood cells a push (energy) to continue going around the whole body
What happens in the circulatory system?
Blood with high oxygen and low CO2 gets pumped through the left side of the heart to all the cells in the body. The cells use the oxygen for respiration and get carried to the right side of the heart (low oxygen more CO2) to be pumped back to the lungs to pick up more oxygen
What are veins?
Have valves to stop the blood going backwards. Takes the blood to the heart
What are arteries?
They have thick walls to help contain the high pressure of the blood. Take blood away from the heart
What are capillaries?
Tiny blood vessels. They can carry blood away or to the heart
How do we get rid of the waste products in respiration?
Water sometimes gets out of the body as urine but water and carbon dioxide both get breathed out during gas exchange
What is Mrs Gren?
Movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excrete, nutrition
What is anaerobic respiration?
Where there isn’t enough oxygen for aerobic respiration since our heart and breathing rate can only reach a certain point
Why do our our heart and breathing rate increase when we exercise?
Because our cells need more energy. For our cells to get energy they need oxygen and glucose for respiration. By increasing our breathing rate, we can take in more oxygen. By increasing our heart rate, more cells can be respired quicker.
Describe the energy we get in respiration
It is released as heat but used as kinetic
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose —> (energy) + lactic acid
What is the symbol equation for anaerobic respiration?
C6H12O6 —> 2C3H6O3
What are the disadvantages of anaerobic respiration?
Lactic acid causes cramps and pain in the muscles
How do we get rid of lactic acid?
Oxygen breaks it down into carbon dioxide and water. We get it by panting and breathing more heavily
