Energy Flashcards
Energy can never be…
Created or destroyed - it is transferred from one thing to another
What do fuels do?
Store energy - we can burn them to release the stored energy as heat
What is an energy resource?
A useful supply or store of energy
What is a non renewable energy resource?
Can’t be replaced once they are all used up
What is a renewable energy resource?
Will never run out
What are some examples of renewable energy resources
Wind turbines, solar panels, hydropower, geothermal
What was coal formed from?
Dead trees and plants
What was crude oil and gas formed from
Dead fish and other marine organisms
What are main nuclear fuels
Plutonium and uranium
What are some advantages of nuclear power stations?
They don’t produce greenhouse gases
What are the disadvantages of nuclear power stations?
They are non-renewable. If there is an accident, large amounts of radioactive material could be released into the environment
What does radioactive mean?
When unstable atoms give off particles that could be harmful to humans
What are some advantages of wind turbines?
Wind is renewable. No greenhouse gases are produced
What are some disadvantages of wind turbines?
Noisy. Very dependable on the wind
How do hydroelectric dams use energy?
They use the waters gravitational potential and transfer it as kinetic energy
What are some disadvantages of hydroelectric power stations?
Hey could destroy species, they flood farmland, the rotting vegetation underneath releases methane
What is geothermal energy?
Energy from the heat of the earth (volcanoes, hot rocks)
What is kinetic energy?
The energy that moving objects have
The more mass a thing has, the ……. it moves and the more kinetic energy it has
Faster
What does internal energy include?
The energy caused by the movement of particles in the object and the energy due to the bonds between particles
What is elastic potential energy?
Energy stored in squashed, stretched or twisted materials
What is gravitational potential energy?
The energy stored by an object lifted up against the force of gravity
What does the gpe depend on?
The mass, the height, the gravity
How can energy be transferred?
Heating, mechanically, electrically, radiation
How does food contain energy?
In the bonds between particles
What are the different types of energy?
Kinetic, Heat, Light, Gravitational potential, Chemical, Sound, Electricity, Elastic potential, Nuclear
