Define “Fail Passive”
Fail Passive is when in the event of a failure, there is no significant out-of-trim condition or deviation of flight path or attitude but the landing is not completed automatically
How is “Fail Passive” capability announced on the A320?
“CAT 3 SINGLE” on the PFD
Define “Fail Operational”
Fail Operational is when in the event of a failure below alert height, the approach, flare and landing can be completed by the remaining part of the automatic system. In event of a failure, the automatic landing system will operate as a fail-passive sytem
Define “Alert Height”
Height above the runway above which a CAT III approach would be discontinued, and a missed approach initiated if a failure occurred in one of the relevant parts of the auto-land system
When a failure occurs below AH, the system ignores it and the approach can be continued
What happens if a failure occurs below alert height?
When a failure occurs below AH, the system ignores it and the approach can be continued
What is the alert height for the A320?
100 ft RA
What is the required aeroplane equipment on the A320 for a CAT II approach?
- Autopilot with ILS coupling
- Radio Altimeter
- Excess ILS deviation warnings
What is the required aeroplane equipment on the A320 for a CAT IIIA approach?
CAT II equipment plus:
- Auto thrust
- Autopilot with an automatic landing mode
What is the required aeroplane equipment on the A320 for a CAT IIIB approach?
CAT IIIA equipment plus:
- Autopilot with a fail-operational automatic landing
system and an automatic missed approach mode
What is the definition of SSP in regards to LVO operation?
“Special Safeguards and Procedures” (SSP)
Same as LVP but it is the Japanese version of it
When will LVP/SSP normally be implemented
Ceiling 200 ft
RVR 550m
What does the implementation of LVP/SSP procedures ensure?
The OFZ (obstacle free zone) and the LSA (Localizer sensitive Area) are clear and protected
From what distance from the runway end does the edge lights turn alternating Yellow and White?
2000 ft / 600m
What is the light configuration for RETILs (Rapid Exit Taxiway Indicator Lights)?
6 Yellow lights adjacent to the centerline in a 3/2/1 pattern spaced 100m apart, the single light is 100m from the start of turn to the exit.
60m before the start of the turn the lights become alternating Yellow and Green
What is the maximum speed during LVO Taxi operations?
10 kts
Can we use FLEX takeoff for a LVTO?
No, has to be TOGA
What is the benefit of using TOGA instead of FLEX for a LVTO?
TOGA generally results in lower takeoff speeds
What LVTO RVR is HKE currently approved for?
RVR 150 - 300m RVR depending on state. Check table
Below what altitude is the Yaw Bar displayed on take-off?
Below 30 ft RA
Define “Decision Height”
The Wheel Height above the runway by which a Go-Around must be initiated, unless adequate visual reference have been established
What DH should be used on a CAT II approach:
Chart minima or HKE minima?
When a higher minima is on the chart, it should be used
If no DH is published for a CAT II/III approach on a approach chart, what minima should be used?
HKE approved minima
What are the visual requirements at DH for a CAT IIIB approach?
1 Centerline light
What are the visual requirements at DH for a CAT IIIA approach?
3 Consecutive lights
Centerline of approach lights or
Touchdown zone lights or
Runway Centerline lights or
Runway Edge lights or a combination of all these
What are the visual requirements at DH for a CAT II approach?
3 Consecutive lights
Centerline of approach lights or
Touchdown zone lights or
Runway Centerline lights or
Runway Edge lights or a combination of all these
BUT
It must include a lateral element of the ground pattern to establish lateral position and cross-track velocity
On a LVO approach, what is DH referenced to?
Radio Altimeter
When is the AUTOLAND red light warning triggered for LVO approaches?
Below 200 ft RA in LAND or FLARE mode
What triggers the AUTOLAND red light warning triggered for LVO approaches?
- Autopilots are lost
- 1/4 dot LOC deviation above 15 ft RA
- 1 dot G/S deviation above 100 ft RA
- Loss of LOC signals above 15 ft RA
- Loss of G/S signal above 100 ft RA
- Difference between both RA:s are greater than 15 ft
When can you revert to higher minima on a LVO approach?
Only above 1000 ft
What failures shall trigger a go-around on a LVO approach?
- ILS course not displayed or incorrect
- No “LAND” indication on the FMA
- AUTOLAND warning light
- No “FLARE” indication on the FMA
- Long Flare detected
What is the HKE recommended Flap configuration for LVO approaches?

Clearance for an CAT II/III approach satisfy that
What are your first actions after a rejected T/O in LVO conditions?
Put all lights ON
Which lights should be switched off on final approach when doing an LVO approach?
