GPWS Flashcards
How many modes does GPWS have?
7
Which alert have priority nr 1, 2 and 3with GPWS warnings?
Priority 1 = Mode 7 “Windshear x3”
Priority 2 = Mode 1 “Pull up” (sink rate)
Priority 3 = Mode 2 “Pull up” (terrin closure)
Describe GPWS Mode 1
Mode 1 = EXCESSIVE DESCENT RATES
Activates below 2’500 ft AGL
Has two protection envelopes:
1. “SINK RATE x 2”
2. “PULL-UP”
Describe GPWS Mode 2
Mode 2 = EXCESSIVE TERRAIN CLOSURE
Activates when terrain is within 2’000 ft of the aircraft
Has two protection envelopes:
1. “TERRAIN TERRAIN”
2. “PULL -UP”
Describe GPWS Mode 3
Mode 3 = ALTITUDE LOSS AFTER TAKE-OFF
Works from 50 ft altitude
Activates when altitude loss is 10% of altitude gained.
(A 50 ft altitude loss after 500 ft altitude gain)
Warning is : “DON’T SINK x 2”
Describe GPWS Mode 4
Mode 4 = INSUFFICIENT TERRAIN CLEARENCE. Alerts below 1’000 ft with “TOO LOW TERRAIN”
Mode 4A: “TOO LOW GEAR” below 500 ft AGL and less
than 190 kts
Mode 4B: “TOO LOW FLAPS” below 245 ft AGL kts and
less than 160 kts
Mode 4C: “TOO LOW TERRAIN” Active during takeoff and alerts when the terrain is rising more steeply than the aircraft is climbing
Describe GPWS Mode 5
Mode 5 = DESCENT BELOW GLIDESLOPE
Works below 925 ft AGL and 1.3 dots Fly Up indication
Soft warning = Below 925 ft and below 1,3 dots
Hard warning = Below 300 ft and below 2,0 dots
Will reset below 50 ft, above 1’900 ft and when selecting a VOR frequency
Describe GPWS Mode 6
Mode 6 = ADVISORY CALLOUTS
“MINIMUMS”
“FIVE HUNDRED”
“50, 40, 30 RETARD”
“BANK ANGLE”
Which one have higher priority, GPWS or TCAS?
GPWS
What happens to the GPWS functions when you get a FAULT light on the TERR pb?
All basic GPWS functions are lost but Enhanced features remain
You get a Terrain Warning, how long until impact?
30 seconds
You get a Terrain Caution, how long until impact?
60 seconds
What is the difference between the basic and enhanced GPWS?
Basic simply looks at the Radio Altimeter while enhanced looks and predicts terrain ahead.
If the TERR function of EGPWS fails, or is selected OFF, what happens to GPWS?
Inhibits the TAD and TCF modes, and does not affect the basic GPWS mode 1-5. If OFF is selected the ECAM caution NAV GPWS TERR DET FAULT is displayed.
When should LDG FLAP 3 pb be selected ON?
Flap mode (too low flaps mode 4) is inhibited, to avoid nuisance warning in case of landing with flaps setting reduced).
How is the terrain information displayed in order to prevent confusion with weather radar?
To differentiate between the terrain and the weather display, the terrain display sweeps form the center outward to both sides of the ND.
What happens to GPWS warnings if the loudspeakers are turned off?
The audio volume of GPWS aural warning or cautions is not controlled by the loudspeaker volume knobs.
Does a “FAULT” light on the SYS pushbutton affect the TERRAIN mode?
No
If the TERR mode failed, does it affect the basic GPWS?
No
What does an amber “FAULT” light in the SYS pushbutton indicate on the GPWS panel?
Any failure of GPWS mode 1-5
Pressing the SYS pushbutton on the GPWS panel does what?
Inhibits all EGPWS warning except TERR system
When is the Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) active?
The GPWS is embedded in the TCAS system (Terrain and Traffic Collision Avoidance system) and generates aural and visual warnings between radio altitudes 10 and 2450ft.
What does Magenta color mean on the Terrain display?
Unknown areas
When is high density red displayed on the Terrain display?
Above +2000 ft of aircraft altitude
When is high density yellow displayed on the Terrain display?
Above +1000 ft but below 2000 ft of aircraft altitude
When is high density green displayed on the Terrain display?
Down to - 1000 ft below aircraft altitude
When is low density green displayed on the Terrain display?
From -1000 ft down to -2000 ft below aircraft altitude
MEMORY ITEM:
