BRAKES/WHEELS Flashcards
When is maintenance action required due high brake temperature?
- Temp difference between two brakes of a gear is
more than 150 deg C and one of those brakes is
more than 600 deg C - Temp difference between two brakes of a gear is
more than 150 deg C and one of those brakes is
less than 60 deg C - Temp of one brake is more than 800/900 deg C
When should the brake fans be turned on during Taxi out?
If brake temp is above 100 deg C
Above what brake temperature shall take-off be delayed?
Above 150 deg C with Brake Fans ON and above 300 deg C with Brake Fans OFF
What are the procedures regarding Brake fans on Taxi In?
Delay Brake Fans for 5 min or until arriving at the gate unless brake temp is likely to go above 500 deg C
Disregard the green arc and display of BRAKE HOT
How do we handle the Park Brake with regards to brake temperatures at the Parking Bay on arrival?
Release Park Brake when chocks are in position and when Brake Temp are above 300 deg C with Fans OFF (150 deg C with the Fans ON)
Avoid using Park Brake above 500 deg C with Fans OFF
At parking during a short turn around, how do you handle the Brake Fans?
Keep the Brake Fans ON until temperature is almost the same as the ambient temperature
When can you select the Brake Fans to OFF at the gate upon arrival?
When the green arc is gone (100 deg C)
What is the max steering angle from the rudder pedals?
6 deg
Is the relationship between tiller deflection and nose wheel angle linear or non-linear?
Non-linear. More tiller input means exponentially more nose wheel angle
At what upper speed limit is nose wheel steering disconnected?
At 130 kts
What two factors affect carbon brake wear?
- The wear of the disks depending on the nr of
brake applications - The oxidation of the disks
What is the cause of oxidation of the brakes?
Repetitive high brake temperature (400 deg C)
What autobrake setting is the preferred one and why?
LO is the preferred one due lower brake temperatures which leads to lower brake oxidation
What systems assist us for braking upon landing?
- Spoilers
- Reversers
- Wheel brakes
When do we stow the reversers after landing?
At taxi speed and before leaving the runway in order to avoid foreign object ingestions
When do we use autobrake MED?
On short or contaminated runways
When using Autobrake MED, what combination of Flaps and Reverse should be avoided and why?
CONF FULL and MAX REV as this minimizes the energy absorbed by the brakes
At what brake temperatures during Preliminary Cockpit Preparation should you not set the parking brake?
500 deg C without Brake Fans
350 deg C with Brake Fans
Why must the park brake be set when doing a walk around?
To be able to check the brake wear pins
What systems assist us for braking upon landing?
- Spoilers
- Reversers
- Wheel brakes
What is the optimum way to use brakes during taxi?
Let the aircraft accelerate up to 30 kts and then use one smooth brake application to decelerate to 10 kts
What is the steering angle of the nose wheel with the handwheel?
75 deg
What is the max steering angle the ground crew can use while towing?
95 deg
What does the GREEN NW STRG DISC msg mean?
NWS is in the towing position with engines not running
What is the purpose of having a max brake temp limitation for take-off?
At the max temp limit there is no risk of leaking hydraulic fluid that touches the wheels to ignite in the wheel well when gear is retracted
By how much can the indicated and actual brake temperature vary, due to Brake Fan usage?
50 to 150 deg
Can we take off with BRK FANS ON?
No, due to the risk of FOD to fans and brakes
