AWOPS/SELECTIONS OF AIRPORTS Flashcards
What is the RFF category is needed for Destinations and Alternates for the A320/A321?
A320: Dest RFF 6
Alt RFF 4
A321: Dest RFF 7
Alt RFF 5
Define “Adequate Airport”
- Runway length sufficient
- RFF category is compatible with the aircraft
- Pavement strength is compatible with aircraft weight
- Has sufficient lighting
- Has ATC
- Has NAV aids
- Weather reporting service
Define “Suitable Airport”
Is an airport that is adequate and Met conditions meet the planning minima for the expected landing time and meets the approach, runway and aircraft capabilities and crew qualifications needed.
For what Runway Conditions Braking action is take-off and landing prohibited?
POOR, NIL or UNRELAIBLE
What is the definition of a Category A airport?
Has:
- An approved instrument approach procedure
- At least one rwy with no performance limits
- Published circling minima not higher then 1000
ft AAL
- Night operation capability
Who can operate into a Category A airport?
All line pilots
What is the definition of a Category B airport?
An airport that does not satisfy Category A requirements or that requires additional operational considerations such as:
- Non-standard approach aids
- Unusual weather conditions
- Unusual characteristics or performance
limitations
What is the Aerodrome Reference Code for the A320/A321, and what does it mean?
4C
4 = Reference field length is 1800m or more
C = Wingsspan 36-24m
Outer Main Gear Wheelspan = 9-6m
What is the standard spacing between runway edge lighting and runway center line lights?
60m for Runway edge lighting
15m for runway center line lights
What Category of aircraft is the A320/A321 on approach plates?
A320 is Cat C
A321 is Cat D
If no minimas are published for take-off, what minimas should be used for the A320?
Rwy Edge Lights AND Center Line Lights + multiple RVR reports = 150m
Rwy Edge Lights AND Center Line Lights =
200m
Rwy edge Lights and/ OR Center Line Markings = 250m
Nil (Adequate Visual Reference day) = 500m
What does
1. “550M/0,8KM” mean?
2. “800M” mean?
- Means RVR is 550m and VIS is 0,8km
- RVR and VIS is the same value, here 800m
What are the minimas for a CAT I approach?
DH 200 ft
RVR 550 m
What are the minimas for a CAT II approach?
DH 100 ft
RVR 300 m
What type of approaches are we allowed to perform?
LOC or LDA
RNAV(GNSS), RNAV(GPS), GPS and RNP
VOR or VOR/DME
NDB or NDB/DME
What type of RNAV approaches are we not allowed to perform?
RNAV(RNP) and RNP (AR)
Can all pilots do a VOR A approach?
No, only Captains
What are the lowest allowed Circling Minimas for HKE?
CAT C Aircraft = 600 ft / 3700 m
CAT D Aircraft = 700 ft / 4600 m
What are the required visual references at Minimas for a CAT I approach?
- Elements of the approach lighting system
- The threshold
- The touchdown zone, zone markings…
- PAPI/VASI
What are the required visual references at Minimas for a CAT I approach?
3 consecutive lights being:
- The center lights of the approach lights or
- Touch down lights or
- Rwy center line lights or
- Rwy edge lights or
- a combination of all the above
Must also include a lateral element:
- An approach lighting crossbar or
- The landing threshold or
- A barrette of the touchdown lighting
What is the difference between:
a) Operational Minimas and
b) Planning Minimas
and when are they to be used respectively?
a) Operational Minimas:
Chart minimas
b) Planning Minimas:
Operational minimas +company approved
buffers
Planning minimas are used for planning before the flight and Operational minimas apply when in-flight
Define the “Relevant time period” in the planning stage for Destination and Alternate Airports?
Destination Airports: ETA
Alternate Airports: ETA +/- 1 hour
What are the Planning Minimas to be used for a take-off alternate?
Weather has to be above CAT I minima or the minima for the approach in use if no CAT I ILS is available
What is the maximum distance that a take-off alternate can be for the A320 and A321?
A320: 380 nm
A321: 330 nm
