Lesson 4A (Part 1) Flashcards
What does the prostate lay?
In the pelvic cavity
Where is the prostate located? (2)
In front of the rectum
- Behind the symphysis pubis
- surrounding the first part of the urethra
What does the prostate consist of?
An outer fibrous covering
- a layer of smooth muscle and glandular substance composed
What is the most common reason for getting the prostate scanned?
Nocturia
Nocturia
Is a condition in which you wake up during the night because you have to urinate
How is the prostate divided up? (2)
- Glandular tissue
2. Non-glandular tissue
What is the glandular tissue made up of? (2)
- Ducts
2. Glands
What do the ducts and glands of the glandular tissues do?
Secrete fluid
What is the tissue that makes up the non-glandular tissue of the prostate?
Fibromuscular tissue
How is the prostate gland classified? (2)
- Prostatic capsule
2. Four zones
What are the 4 zones of the prostate gland?
- The anterior
- The transition
- The central
- The peripheral
What is the prostate gland encased in?
Fibromuscular layer
What is the fibromuscular layer also known as?
Prostatic capsule
What kind of capsule is the prostatic capsule?
Not a true capsule
What is the most prominent along the base of the prostate gland?
Prostatic capsule
What does extracapsular extension refer to?
To prostate cancer that has spread outside of the prostate capsule and into the surrounding tissues and organs
Where is the anterior zone located?
In the front of the prostate gland
What does the front of the prostate gland refer to?
The part of the prostate gland which is closest to theabdomenrather than the rectum
What kind of tissue is non glandular tissue?
Muscular tissue
Where is the transition zone?
The innermost part of the prostate gland and surrounds the urethra where it passes through the organ
When does the transition zone begin to enlarge?
When a man passes the age of 40
Why does the enlargement of the transition zone cause difficulty with urination or ejaculation?
Because of the immediate proximity to the urethra
What % does the transition zone make up of the glandular volume?
5%
What % is the transition zone a site for prostate cancer?
10%
When does the central zone begin to enlarge?
After the age of 40
What does the central zone surround?
The transition zone
What % of the transition zone is non glandular volume?
25%
What % of central zone is involved with prostate cancer cases?
5%
Where is the peripheral zone located?
In the back of the prostate gland closest to the rectum
What % of the peripheral zone is involved with prostatic volume?
80%
What % is the peripheral zone involved with prostatic cancer?
80%
