Lesson 3A (Part 1) Flashcards
What do breast lie over?
The pectoral muscles
How are breasts attached to the pectoral muscles?
By a layer of connective tissue
- fascia
What makes up breasts? (4)
- Milk-producingmammary glands
- Extensive supporting tissues
- Adipose tissue
- Coopers suspensory ligaments
Coopers suspensory ligaments
Ligaments that help support the glandular and connective tissues of the entire structure, anchoring them to the coverings of the underlying pectoral muscles
What does each breast consist of?
Several lobes separated by septa (walls) of connective tissue
What does each lobe consist of?
Lobules
What do lobules contain?
Connective tissues in which are embedded in the pouches of milk-secreting cells
What is another word for the pouches of milk-secreting cells?
Alveoli
How are the alveoli arranged?
Into grape-like clusters around the tiny ductule
Where do you find myoepithelial cells?
Present around the outside of the alveolus
What do myoepithelial cells do?
Contracts slightly, as if it were a muscle cell, thus squeezing milk out into the secretory duct
What do the ductules from the various lobules unite to form?
Singlelactiferous ductfor each lobe
How many singlelactiferous duct are therefor each lobe?
15-20 in each breast
TDLU
Terminal ductolobular unit
What is the number one area where cancer forms?
Terminal ductolobular unit
What does the terminal ductolobular unit contain? (2)
- Lobule
2. Ductal
How is the lactiferous sinuses positioned?
To be squeezed by the suckling motion of a baby’s jaws during breastfeeding
What do sinuses act as?
Little pumping chambers that help move milk out of the breast
What does each of the main ducts do?
Terminates in a tiny opening on the surface of the nipple
What is the function of the lactiferous sinuses?
When an infant is properly latched on to the breast, its jaws squeeze the lactiferous sinuses rhythmically, thus pumping milk out of the breast and into the back of the infant’s mouth
What are nipples bordered by?
Areola
Areola
Circular pigmented area
What does the areola contain?
Numerous sebaceous glands
- small nodules under the skin
What is another name for numerous sebaceous glands?
Montgomery’s tubercles
What do the areolar glands produce?
Sebum
What does sebum do?
Helps to reduce irritating dryness of the areolar skin associated with nursing
- helps with moisturizing
What do areolar secretions contain (other than sebum)?
Pheromones
What do pheromones do?
Enhance the mother/infant social bond
What is the function of the mammary glands?
Lactation
Lactation
The secretion of milk for the nourishment of a newborn infants
