Lecture 22 Cell Adhesions and Contacts Flashcards
What do cells form contacts with?
The ECM and other cells (well that was useless information…)
What are the intracellular contacts often associated with?
cytoskeletons
What are selectins
cell surface proteins that bind carbohydrates
What are tight junctions
Prevent diffusion in the space between cells
within the epithelium
are associated with the actin cytoskeleton
What are adherens junctions?
Proteins that make up these junctions are called cadherens, which attach to the actin cytoskeleton
What are cadherens
They attatch to the actin cytoskeleton and act as transcription when they are too lazy to not link up (when they do this they get on their cell phones and tell the cell that it is not in contact with other cells) (cell phone… get it?)
What are desmosomes
They use cadherens and attach to intermediate filaments
What are gap junctions?
they are a space ebtween cells that allow movement of small molecules from one cell to another
proteins it uses are called connexins
What are focal adhesions?
attach to actin cytoskeleton
proteins involved are called integrin (heterondimers)
What are hemidesmosomes
Link from the cell and ECM using integrins and are linked to the intermediate filaments
What is a plasmadesmota (sounds like a plant)
Found only in plants! allows the sharing of cytosol between cells and often have ER going through them
