Lecture 21 Extracellular Matrix (ECM) Flashcards
What are cell walls made up of?
peptidyl lycan
gram positive- thick cell wall
gram negative- thin cell wall between two membranes
What is Chitin (you gotta be chitin me)
Located in cells walls of fungi
Three types of proteins that make up animal ECM
collagen and elastin
proteoglycan
multi-adhesive matrix proteins
What cells make the ECM
all cells but mostly fibroblasts because they are a one trick pony… yea thats why… science says so
collagen vs elastin
collagen is the most abudant protein in humans and is also rigid
elastin is stretchy like play-doh (yes im tired give me a break)
Characteristics of proteoglycans (AKA the sluts of the protein world)
Proteoglycans can be stretched… sluts
or attached to the cell surface
They have more carbohydrates than proteins (fat sluts)
Proteoglycans are negatively charged (negative nancy’s) and bind a lot of water which causes them to be slippery (sluts)
They also resist contraction (because they do what they want)
What is an example of a proteoglycan
cartilage
What is fibronectin
it has RGD motif, which can bind integrins
found in most other ECM’s
What is a motif (i dont know but it sounds like a fancy drink)
a specific short sequence of amino acids with a specific function
