Lecture 16 Mitochondria/Peroxisomes Flashcards
What is cristae
the inner folds/membrane in the mitochondria
What does the mitochondria do
I doesnt do a lot of things but it primarily does not do glycolysis and fermentation
Well if it doesnt do those, then what DOES it do… lazy mitochondria
Aerobic respiration, fatty acid oxidation, lipid synthesis
How is ATP made?
From protons falling down the proton gradient to make ATP from ADP
How does a new mitochondria arise?
The new mitiochondria must be split from the parent because new mitochondria cannot be synthesized
How do proteins get into the mitochondria
They can be made there or be imported
mitochondria can synthesize proteins from its mtDNA genes
How are proteins imported into the mitochondria
they are imported from the cytosol on cytoplasmic ribosomes
What are tim/tom proteins
The border patrol proteins that that import proteins into the mitochondria
What are the functions of the peroxisome
Oxidation- primary function that oxidizes fatty acids
Lipidation- similar to glycerol lipids except that one fatty acid is attached by an ether bond
Other metabolic pathways
How are peroxisomes made
made de novo from the ER membrane or by division of existing peroxisomes
How do proteins get into the peroxisome
by a signal sequence- PTS1 and PTS2
