Lecture 11 Translation Flashcards
Where does translation take place
in ribosomes in the cytosol
What are ribosome made up of?
rRNA and proteins
What does the ribosome bind?
The 5’ cap of mRNA
When does the ribosome start translation?
When it scans mRNA until it sees the start codon (AUG)
What are initiation factors (IF’s)
proteins that help to assemble ribosome and the initiator onto mRNA
what is initiator tRNA
binds top of the initiator tRNA and will synthesize protein
What is the anticodon
tRNA: base pairs with codon of mRNA
What is the acceptor stem
tRNA: bound to a specific amino acid
What do the there ribosomal sites for tRNAs do?
3 tRNAs that help hold RNA together
What are release factors?
proteins that bind stop codon and make ribosome fall apart
What is the mRNA between the stop codon and Poly-A tail called?
I dont know if this is importnat but it is called the 3’ UTR
What is it called when many ribosomes are on one mRNA at the same time?
The entire complex is called a polysome
What are siRNAs and miRNAs
short interfering RNA’s and small inhibiting RNA’s
inhibits by binding mRNA still on RNA Polymerase and recruiting RITS, which in turn recruit modifiers to convert DNA to heterochromatin
