What is lean production?
A process where all employees are involved in undertaking working practices to meet the demands of the consumer efficiently and effectively
What is involved in lean production?
- TQM
- Kaizen
- JIT
- Quality circles
- Cell production
- Time based management
What is time based management?
Reducing the time between the thought of an idea to the production of the product, aided by Computer Aided Design to eliminate the need of prototypes
What is total quality management?
Considers efficient usage of all the resources used. All employees responsible for quality of the product, empowered to take responsibiliy. Prevents defects.
What is jidoka?

What is JIT?
Where stock levels are kept low in order to reduce the amount of space required for storing stock. More frequent deliveries.
What is kanban?
Helps orgnise the flow of production so componants are at the right place at the right time. Helps JIT, as stock used, replaced quantities on prodution line
Benefits of JIT
- Reduced costs
- Less cash tied up in stock
- Less likelihood of damage, theft or perishing
Drawbacks of JIT
- Delay from suppliers could halt production
- Serious errors may mean no stock for replacement
- High costs to set up JIT
What is ergonomics?
Reducing amount of time wasted in using machinery e.g hanging drills up
