Why is HR important?
- UK is service driven, people are critical resources
- Competitiveness requires a business to be efficient and productive, difficult unless workers are motivated, have the right skills and are effectively organised
What are the strategic tools?
- Workforce planning
- Recruitment and training
- Training and development
- Motivating staff
- Organisational structures
How would the objective - ensure human resources are employed cost effectively, be implemented?
Pay rate should be competitive not excessive, minimise staff turnover, measure returns on investment in training
How would the objective - make effective use of workforce and match the workforce to the business needs be implemented?
Need suitable, achievale workloads, avoid under/overloading staff
Right number, right skills, training programmes to cover skill gaps
How might the objective - maintain good employee/employer relations be achieved?
Avoid unnecessary industrial disputes, timely and honest communication, sensitive handling of dismissal and redundancy, comply with legislation
What must HR objectives do?
Link with corporate objectives and communicate with other departments
How do external influences impact HR objectives?
Market changes - loss of market share = job losses
Economic changes - recession = redundancy
Technological changes - changes in communication
Social changes - single person households, house husbands
Political and legal changes - Employment legislation
