What is communication?
It is about sending, recieving and understanding information, vital for the efficiency of a business
What is the process of communication?
process -> sender -> channel of communication/medium -> reciever
What is the purpose of communication?
- Providing information
- Giving instructions
- Persuading people to do something
What is formal communication?
These are recognised by employees and employee representatives e.g written notice of termination of employment
What is informal communication?
Non approved channels e.g the grapevine
What is vertical communication?
From management being passed down to employees on the shopfloor
What are the benefits of vertical communication?
- Allows decisions to be carried out by employees
- Ensures action is consistent
- Reduces costs because less mistakes made
- Leads to greater effectiveness and profitability
- Helps managers understand workers point of view
What is horizontal communication?
Communication between people on the same level of the organisational structure
Why is horizontal communication beneficial?
Aids teamworking and co operation

What is a chain network?
Associated with formal and vertical heirachy. Used by large organisations. Info goes up and down. Can make you feel isolated at entry level
What is a circle network?
Restricted, usually communication between departments, e.g 2 people, time consuming and expensive
What is a wheel network?
Centralised, message from the middle that is fed out, limits initiative and thinking for yourself
