Lab Exercise 6: Movements through membranes. Flashcards
Why do passive processes occur?
Because of molecular motion or hydrostatic pressure.
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the random motion of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low.
What does the rate of diffusion depend on?
Concentration gradient, temperature, and molecular size.
What effect would an increase in temperature have on the rate of diffusion?
An increase in temperature would cause an increase in molecular motion or kinetic energy resulting in an increase in the rate of diffusion,
What is osmosis?
Osmosis occurs when water molecules diffuse through a selectively permeable membrane from an area of high concentration to an area of low.
What does tonicity refer to?
Tonicity refers to the osmotic pressure of a solution in relation to the cell.
What makes a solution isotonic?
If the osmotic pressure is the same as the cell.
What serves as a isotonic solution to a human cell?
5% Glucose solution
0.9% Normal Saline.
What happens when a human cell is placed into hypertonic solution?
The human cell will shrivel up, known as crenate.
What happens when a human cell is placed into hypotonic solution?
The cell will firstly swell and then eventually burst. This is known as lysed.
What is filtration?
Filtration is the movement of water and solutes through a selectively permeable membrane.
How does filtration occur?
The pressure gradient forces the water and solutes (Filtrate) from the higher hydrostatic pressure area to a lower hydrostatic pressure area.
What is hypertension?
Hypertension (High blood pressure) is a condition that would increase capillary filtration as hydrostatic pressure is increased.
