KA7- Inheritance Flashcards
What is vertical transfer?
The transfer of genetic sequences from parent to offspring
What is vertical transfer a result of?
Asexual or sexual reproduction
Where does vertical transfer occur?
Prokaryotes and eukaryotes
What happens in asexual reproduction?
A single parent divides to produce identical offspring with the exact same genome
Why does sexual reproduction result in variation?
As offspring’s inherit different combinations of genes from each parent
What are the two types of inheritance?
Vertical transfer and horizontal transfer
Does horizontal transfer affect prokaryotes or eukaryotes?
Prokaryotes
How is horizontal transfer different from vertical transfer?
The genetic material moves between members of a population, but not from parent to offspring
What did horizontal transfer allow early prokaryotes to do?
Rapid evolutionary change
What does horizontal transfer allow?
New genetic sequences to be transferred between prokaryotes very quickly, rather than waiting for a new mutation to occur
Why is horizontal transfer risky?
As there are no guarantees that the transferred genetic material will give an advantage
