KA2- Electron transport chain Flashcards
What is ETC?
A group of protein molecules embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane
What do these protein molecules act as?
Electron acceptors and carriers collecting high energy electrons from NADH
Where do these electrons flow along?
A chain of electron acceptors releasing energy, which is sued to pump H+ ions across the membrane from the matrix to the inner membrane space by active transport
What do high energy electrons drive?
The pumps which move H+ ions through the membrane
What does this pump create?
A high concentration of H+ between the mitochondrial membranes
What is oxygen?
The final hydrogen ion/electron acceptor
What will the chain no operate without?
Oxygen
What happens when electrons reach the end of the chain?
They combine with H+ ions and oxygen to form water
The return flow of H+ ions occurs through what?
ATP synthase which is embedded in the mitochondrial membrane
