KA6- Chromosome mutations Flashcards
What do body cells have?
Two homologous sets of chromosomes
What happens to chromosomes before mitosis occurs?
They need to be replicated
When does a chromosome structure mutation occur?
When a whole section of a chromosome breaks and re-joins in different ways, which alters the number and sequence of genes
What does deletion involve? (Chromosome)
A chromosome breaking in two places and a portion of genetic material being lost
What does translocation involve?
A section of one non-homologous chromosome breaking off and becoming attached to another chromosome
What is duplication?
When genes are added to a chromosome from its homologous partner
What is inversion?
When a section within a chromosome is turned upside down
Are chromosomal mutations often lethal?
Yes
