KA4- Stem Cells Flashcards
What are the two types of stem cells?
Tissue stem cells
Embryonic stem cells
What can unspecialised stem cells do?
Divide by repeated mitosis, remaining undifferentiated
Differentiate into specialised cells
Are embryonic SC pluripotent or multipotent?
Pluripotent
Are tissue SC pluripotent or multipotent?
Multipotent
What does multipotent mean?
Can only turn into limited cell types
What is a blastocyst?
Embryonic SC which are found in an early embryo
What does pluripotent mean?
Can turn into all cell types
What do all genes in an embryonic DC have the potential to do?
Be switched on
Why are tissue SC multipotent?
As some genes have already been switched off
What are tissue SC used to do?
Replace cells in tissue where they are located so growth + repair
