Justice and Liberation Flashcards
What is justice?
Ensuring that people are treated fairly, given equal provisions
Give Qur’an 4:135.
“O ye who believe stand out firmly for justice…”
What is liberation?
Free people spiritually, to free them from oppression from the Government, from injustice and wrongdoing. People are liberated when justice comes about.
What command suggests that the community should focus on justice?
“Let there be one community of you, calling to good and commanding right and forbidding wrong; those are the prosperers.”
What does the Prophet say about justice?
“Who ever sees a wrong and is able to put it right with his hand, let him do so. If he can’t then with his tongue; if he can’t then in his heart and that is the bare minimum of faith”
Give Qur’an 9:71.
“And the believers, the men and the women are friends one of the other; they command right and forbid wrong.”
Who does Ghazali think can forbid wrong?
A boy approaching puberty can forbid wrong and it is accepted by Ghazali and others that slaves must order people not to do wrong e.g. play chess
Who does Ghazali say can’t forbid wrong?
An infidel cannot carry out the duty as it is a duty carried out in faith and also if a non Muslim told a Muslim not to commit adultery, then he is exercising an illegitimate authority over the Muslim.
Can women forbid wrong?
They are not implicitly included but not explicitly excluded. One sufi master of the C9 claimed that woman should forbid wrong with the heart alone.
What did Hanifa say about forbidding wrong?
“Putting things right with the hand is for the political authorities with the tongue for the scholars and in the heart for the common people”
To whom does Ghazali say justice can be metered out?
In one account he does state that the offender may be a boy or a drunk man and both need to be forbidden from wrong doing.
What is Fard Kifaya?
It means that all of the community should be involved in metering out justice and forbidding wrong.
What does Amiji say about Fard Kifaya?
10 men have to forbid the wrong to a wrong doer. If one man steps forward and does this on behalf of the other 9 then the obligation of the community is fulfilled and that is the end of the matter.
What did Ghazali say about justice by the tongue?
Correct someone but without humiliation and not publicly
What did Ghazali say about justice by the hand?
Destroying objects e.g. musical instruments and removing someone from a place they shouldn’t be
Violence against the offender - give a warning first
Collect a band of armed men when dealing with the government
