Joints of the Thoracic Limb Flashcards
Fibrous joints (synarthroses)
Bones held together by thin layer of dense fibrous connective tissue, immovable, ex. between bones of the skull
3 types of slightly moveable joints (amphiarthrosis)
Syndesmosis, synchondrosis, symphysis
Syndesmosis
Occurs when two bones join by a section of cartilage, ex. betweeen tibia and fibula
Synchondrosis
Union between two bones formed by hyaline cartilage ex. sternocostal joint, where ribs meet sternum
Symphysis
Each vertebrae is divided by a cartilaginous joint, provides cushion , ex. between pubic vertebrae
4 types of free moveable joints (diarthrosis)
Ball and socket, hinge, plane/gliding, pivot (all synovial)
Ball and socket joint
Encapsulated, fluid, cartilage on contact surface, allows rotation and can move in all planes, ex. hip and shoulder joint
All synovial joints have
Articular surfaces on bones, articular cartilage covering articular surface, fluid filled joint cavity enclosed by joint capsule
Hinge joint
Can bend in only one direction, ex. knee and elbow
Plane/gliding joint
Opposing surfaces are nearly plane and there is only a slight gliding motion, ex. wrist and vertebrae
Pivot joint
Allows limited rotation, ex. head and neck
