J1 - Building Science - LT #4 Flashcards
What can be used to tie the footing to the foundation wall & anchor bolts?
Rebar & Dowels.
What can be used to provide extra anchorage between the foundation & wall?
Strap anchors
When rods provide continuous tie from the top of the building to the foundation, what is used to join the sections of rod?
Couplers
What is a wall-to-floor system strap used for?
Tying an upper wall to a lower wall late to the floor system.
What is a wall-to-floor system strap used for?
Tying an upper wall to a lower wall plate to the floor system.
What is a drag-strut used for?
Maintaining continuous horizontal pat for load transfer.
What is installed at the perimeter of the foundation wall near the top and tied in to restrict the movement of anchor bolts?
Continuous later band of steel
What can be utilized to assist in anchoring the building to the foundation?
Straps embedded in the concrete foundation in addition to anchor bolts.
Seismic hardware is not designed to assist foundation but rather?
Use the foundation to anchor and receive loads transferred from above.
Why is toe-nailing the floors to a plate a weak connection?
Wood can easily split.
Hold down -
Secured to the concrete foundation with an anchor bolt, then bolted through a series of solid studs at or very near the end of the walls. The number of studs and their nailing requirements are determined by P. Eng
At the top of each wall, hold down:
Inverted hold-down is bolted through the same stud package as at the bottom and a threaded rod is used to connect it to the next stud package in the wall above.
How can you help openings hold together while under load?
Metal galvanized straps across the headers & onto the trimmer joists at each end.
When using a mechanical fastener such as a strip on the outside wall, what must be done on the inside of the wall?
The fastener should be utilized on the inside of the wall.
What is a drag strut?
Connector for connecting a beam to a truss or to the top of a plate of a collinear bearing wall. Completing the load path allows loads to be transferred out of the roof or floor sheathing into the wall system where the shear walls are.
