H7 - Exterior Structures - LT #2 Flashcards
What are the three elements that make up a typical fence?
Post, rail and cladding
What type of nails should you use for a fence build?
Corrosive resistant
Fence post must be buried:
1/3rd the length of 2’ deep
Why is the dirt or concrete sloped away from the base of a fence post?
Directing water away from post hole
Bottom rail on a fence should be raised:
6” from the ground
Even if a fence is built on sloping ground, the rails should be
Level if not too steep.
Why is knee bracing important for Gazebos?
No walls for lateral stability

Safety glass or plexi glass.
What are fences sued for?
Defining an area. Can be mainly ornamental or may be used to keep children or pets confined within an area.
Term screen applies to:
Any railing, cladding difficult to see through.
Privacy screen used for:

Fences and screens both must be strong enough to support:
Resist rot and support people climbing them.
Minimum post size is
3.5 x 3.5 typically spaced 6.5 to 10 feet apart. Set the width of panels.
What is a Major post?
Corner post and the posts on either side of Gates
How deep are Major posts set?
Need to be set extra deep
Non pressure treated posts need to be soaked how far from bottom?
Soak the bottom 600 mm in wood preservative for 12 hours.
Why is a post hole wider at the bottom
To be anchored more securely.
What is required at the bottom of a post hole?
Two shovels of gravel for drainage.
How should corner posts be set?
Taking loads in both directions, good idea to to pack with gravel or concrete and leave them to settle with braces attached for a couple of days.
If gravel is used instead of corner posts, what is required?
Tamp the gravel in 6” layers to compact.
Top of posts should be capped why?
Shed water and prevents rotting.
Typ. 2 x 4 wood top and bottoms rails are installed between posts. Accomplished by:
Nailing supports to posts, notching or mortising.
Cladding materials are usually which dimensions?
3/4” or 1” lumber.
When panels are used, anchor clips can be used instead of rails only if:
Panels are rigid enough.
Accessory building is defined as:

Garden shed, gazebo and playhouse.
Garden Shed:
3 or 4 walls and a roof. May have a slab floor. wooden floor or no floor.
Gazebo:
Decorative, free standing building open on all sides. Wood or concrete floor and is roofed. Required knee bracing as there is no lateral stability.
Exposed locations of Gazebos require:
Anchorage to withstand uplift.
Safety concerns for a children play-house:
Pointed portions need rounding
Finishes should be sliver-free
No fastener points should protrude.
Windows should be of safety or plexiglass.
