What is Ipratropium Bromide?
An antimuscarinic Bronchodilator drug to provide short-term relief in acute asthma. (salbutamol may work more quickly). Has a benefit for adults with COPD or children with acute asthma
Indications?
Acute, severe or life threatening asthma.
Acute asthma unresponsive to Salbutamol
Exacerbation of COPD.
Contra-Indications?
None in the emergency situation.
Dosage and Administration?
In life threatening or acute severe asthma undertake time critical transfer to nearest hospital and provide nebulisation on route. 500 micrograms max.
Route?
Nebuliser with oxygen
Cautions?
Use with caution on patients with Glaucoma, pregnancy and breastfeeding and prostatic hyperplasia.
In COPD limit administration to 6 mins.
