Introduction (1) Flashcards
What is an obligate pathogen discussed lecture 1?
kennel cough
B. bornchioseptica
What does establishment of infections require?
encounter
entry
multiplication and spread
damage
outcome
Gram [positive/negative] stains pink
gram negative
Gram [positive/negative] has a thick peptidoglycan membrane
gram positive
What is an oxidase test?
used to determine whether an organism possesses the cytochrome c oxidase enzyme
What is a catalase test?
used to identify organisms that produce the enzyme, catalase
this enzyme detoxifies hydrogen peroxide by breaking it down into water and oxygen gas. The bubbles resulting from production of oxygen gas clearly indicate a catalase positive result.
What is a coagulase test?
Coagulase is an enzyme that clots blood plasma. This test is performed on Gram-positive, catalase positive species to identify the coagulase positive Staphylococcus aureus.
Coagulase is a virulence factor of S. aureus.
What is a CAMP test?
commonly used for the presumptive identification of Streptococcus agalactiae (Lancefield group B)
