What are intra oral films made up of?
plastic envelope: to protect the contents from saliva contamination
black paper: to prevent exposure of light to film
film: exposed to ionising radiation + produces dental image
lead foil: prevent scatter of ionising radiation past the film packet
Horizontal bitewings
show posterior teeth + are typically taken to view distal of 4 to mesial of 8
used for:
inter proximal caries, restoration overhangs, caries beneath fillings/crowns, occlusal caries
Vertical bitewings
show extended view of posterior teeth, from mid root of uppers to mid root of lower used for:
see periodontal bone levels of posterior teeth, true periodontal pockets, detect moderate to severe periodontal disease
Periapical
show one or two teeth in full + surrounding bone
used for:
detection of abscesses, assessment of roots before XLA, during endodontics + assessment of periodontal status
Occlusal
show plane view of anterior section of either maxilla or mandible
used for:
view unerupted teeth, detect supernumerary, evaluate cysts/tumours
