A closer look at justification Flashcards
introduction
any x-ray should show net benefit to pt, weighing potential diagnostic benefits against individual detriment exposure might cause
An IRMER practitioner
takes responsibility for individuals’ medical exposure (dentist or qualified dp in radiography) “no exposure can take place unless justified by IRMER practitioner”
When justifying exposure,
The IRMER practitioner should take into account many factors:
1.
specific objectives + characteristics of individual involved
2.
total potential diagnostic benefit to pt
3.
individual detriment exposure may cause
4.
alternative available techniques
5.
info supplied by referrer, including info available from previous x-rays
Therefore,
efficacy, benefits + risk of available alternative methods having same objective but involving no/less exposure should be taken into account
The anticipated benefits
are the x-ray exam would add new info to aid pt’s management - indicating radiographs not to be performed routinely, but prescribed according to pt’s clinical exam
Each radiograph
should be clearly justified in pt’s clinical records + findings clearly noted
