Intestines Flashcards
Normal small intestines
Normal small intestines
Normal small intestines
Define: Ileus
Disruption of the normal propulsive ability of the GI tract
What does functional ileus look like on radiographs?
Lumen remains patent
Diameter is relatively consistent throughout all loops
What does mechanical ileus look like on radiographs?
Caused by physical obstruction
Non-uniform distention of bowel
2 distinct populations of bowel
Causes of focal involvement/mild distention of small bowels
Less than 25% of bowel involved
Normal passing air and ingesta
Regional enteritis
Regional peritonitis (incl. pancreatitis)
Early acute or partial obstruction
Early functional ileus
Focal mild distention
Focal mild distention
Causes of focal involvement/severe distention of small bowels
Mechanical obstruction
Shorter the segment of small bowel involved, the higher the location of the obstruction
