Koch used industrial dyes to stain and grow bacteria in a petri dish. Found that different germs caused different diseases

Discovered the anti-septic carbolic acid, which surgeons used to spray the operating theater

discovered Chloroform- the first effective anesthetic. Made popular by Queen Victoria who used it in the birth of her eight child.
