b5a- homeostasis and response: nervous control side two Flashcards
What is the function of the cerebral cortex? (2)
Largest part of human brain
Higher thinking skills
What is the function of the cerebellum?
Balance and voluntary muscle function
What is the function of the medulla?
Involuntary ( automatic) body functions
What is the function of the retina?
light sensitive cell layer
What is the function of the optic nerve?
Carries impulse to brain
What is the function of the sclera?
Protects the eye
What is the function of the cornea?
Transparent layer that covers pupil and iris
What is the function of the iris?
Pigmented layer that controls size of pupil
What is the function of the cilliary muscles?
Controls thickness of lens
What is the function of the suspensory ligaments?
Connects lens to ciliary muscles
What can the eye do to change the amount of light entering it?
Circular muscles and radial muscles in the iris can contract and relax to alter the size of the pupil to change the amount of light entering the eye
What happens if bright light hits the eye? (3)
Circular muscles contract
Radial muscles relax
Pupil constricts
What happens if dim light hits the eyes? (3)
Circular muscles relax
Radial muscles contract
Pupils dilate
What is myopia and how can it be treated? (3)
Short sightedness
Light is focused in the front of the retina
Treated using concave lens so light is focused on the retina
What is hyperopia and how can we treat it? (3)
Long sightedness
Light is focused behind retina
Treated by using convex lens so light is focused on retina
