C1b- atomic structure and the periodic table Flashcards
metals (6)
Form positive ions
Conductors
High melting point
High boiling point
Ductile
Malleable
non- metals (4)
Form negative ions
Insulators
Low melting points
Low boiling point
group 7 (4)
HALOGENS
Melting and boiling points increase down the group
Reactivity decreases down the group
atomic mass gets heavier as you go down
group one (2)
ALKALI METALS
very reactive with oxygen, water and chlorine
reactivity increases as you go down the group
group 0 (2)
NOBLE GASES
very unreactive and don’t form molecules- they already have a full outer shell
They are all gases but their boiling point increase as you go down the group
transition metals (2)
Compared to group one metals, the transition metals are less reactive, harder, denser and have higher melting points.
Some special properties of transition metals include: forming ions with different charges, acting as catalysts etc.
Before the discovery of protons
Elements used to be arranged in order of atomic weight
What did Mendeleev do?
Left gaps for undiscovered elements
