B2b- organisation of plants and animals (side two) Flashcards
problem- faulty valves- this causes blood to flow in both directions and blood now does not circulate effectivley. (2)
treatments mechanical valves- lasts a long time but need to take medicine for life biological valves (from animals)- lasts ten years and no medicine needed but surgery complicated
problem- faulty pacemaker- heart rate incorrect
treatment
artificial pacemaker- regular check ups needed
probem- heart failure
treatment
artificial heart, temporary while waiting for a donor- dont have to wait for a donor, however blood might clot and surgery complications
transplant of donor heart- have to wait for donor and a risk of operation
problem- coronary heart disease: layers of fatty acids build up inside coronary arteries, blocking them. Blood flow now reduced resulting in lack of oxygen for heart
treatment
stent( metal mesh inserted in artery to keep open) effective for a long time but risks of surgery/heart attacks etc.
statins (drugs to reduce cholesterol which slows rate of fatty deposit build up)- reduces risk of strokes/heart attacks, however forgetting to take drug comes with bad side effects.
what happens to your blood if you have faulty valves
causes blood to flow in both directions and blood does not circulate correctly now
what does it mean if you have a faulty pacemaker
heart rate is incorrect
what is coronary heart disease (2)
layers of fatty acids build up inside coronary arteries, blocking them
blood flow is now reduced resulting in lack of oxygen for the heart.
