A

At the end of the revolt of the Northern Earls, Elizabeth executed many Catholics involved- therefore the Pope excommunicated her, meaning Catholics no longer had to obey her

A

Roberto ridolfi, an Italian banker arranged meetings with the Pope and Phillip II of Spain
Aim was for 10,000 Spanish Troops to invade England and overthrow Elizabeth, then replace her with Mary
England was to become Catholic
Elizabeth executed
Duke of Norfolk was to marry Mary

A

Duke of Norfolk executed
Spanish ambassadors in England were expelled as Elizabeth could no longer trust them
A new law was passed saying that anyone who said she wasn’t a rightful queen would be executed
Catholics were now monitored much closer by Walsingham
Because of Spains threat, Elizabeth tried to improve relations with France

What was the Throckmorton plot? (3)

A

Organised by Catholics against Elizabeth
French duke of Guise, a cousin of Mary’s, plotted to invade England and overthrow Elizabeth
Then his plan was to free Mary and make England Catholic again

A

Walsingham discovered the plot
Walsinghams spies found papers at Throckmortons house that revealed his part
Throckmorton confessed was arrested and tortured.
He then was executed after confessing his involvement

A

babington had been given the plot idea by a priest who secretly worked for walsingham
unknown to the plotters, walsingham had placed spies in Marys house
spies in Mary’s house had intercepted her personal letters and decoded them
Mary sent to trial for her involvement and her verdict was guilty, she was recommended execution
