B5a- homeostasis and response side one Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
the regulation of the internal conditions of a cell or organism to maintain optimum conditions for function.
What do receptor cells do?
detect stimuli (changes in the environment)
What are co-ordination centres?
receive information from receptors
What are effectors?
Muscles or glands which bring about a response to restore optimum levels
What are reflex actions?
Automatic and rapid
do not involve the conscious part of the brain and can protect humans from harm
name the four sense organs
ears
eyes
skin
nose and tongue
what are the ear receptors sensitive to?
sound and changes in position for balance
what are the eye receptors sensitive to?
light
what are the skin receptors sensitive to?
touch,pressure,pain and temperature
what are the nose and tongue receptors sensitive to?
chemicals for smell and taste
what is a synapse?
gap where neurons meet
