B5b- hormonal control side 1 Flashcards
What does testosterone do? (2)
Main male reproductive hormone
Stimulates sperm production in testes
What does oestrogen do? (1)
Main female reproductive hormone produced in the ovaries
What does FSH do? (2)
Matures an egg in the ovaries
Stimulates ovary to produce oestrogen
What does LH do?
Stimulates a release of an egg (ovulation)
What does progesterone do? (2)
Maintains uterus lining
Inhibits release of LH and FSH
What’s the role of the pituitary glands hormones? (2)
‘The master gland’
Secretes several hormones into the blood to stimulate other glands to release hormones
What’s the role of the thyroid’s hormones?
Controls metabolic rate
Whats the role of the pancreas’ hormones?
Controls glucose levels
Whats the role of the adrenal glands hormones?
Prepares body for stress
Whats the role of the ovaries hormomes?
Involved in the menstrual cycle
Whats the role of the testes hormones?
Involved in sperm production
What is homeostatis?
The regulation of internal conditions of a cell/ organism to maintain optimum conditions for the cell to function
What organ monitors blood glucose concentration?
Pancreas
What happens if the blood glucose concentration is to high? (3)
Pancreas produces insulin
Glucose moves from the blood to cells
In liver and muscle cells excess glucose is converted to glycogen for storage
Blood glucose too low? (2)
Pancreas produces glucagon
This causes the glycogen to be converted into glucose and released into blood
TYPE ONE DIABETES
pancreas fails to produce enough insulin leading to uncontrolled blood levels
TREATMENT
insulin injections
TYPE TWO DIABETES
Obesity is a risk factor. Body does not respond to insulin.
TREATMENT
changing diet and increasing exercise
oral contraceptive (pill)
Contains hormones to inhibit FSH so no eggs mature
Injection/implant/patch
releases progesterone slowly to inhibit the maturation and release of eggs
Barrier methods ee. condoms/ diaphragms
prevent sperm from reaching egg
intrauterine devices
prevent an implantation of embryo
spermicidal agents
kill or disable sperm
abstinence
avoiding sex when an egg may be in the oviduct
surgery
male or female sterilization
VITRO FERTILIZATION (IVF) (4)
eggs collected from mother (after being given FSH and LH to stimulate maturation of multiple egg)
fertilized by fathers sperm in lab
fertilized eggs develop into embryos
one or two embryo’s inserted into mothers uterus
Disadvantages of IVF (3)
emotional and physical stress
low success rates
multiple births risk to mother and babies
