Imaging of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems Flashcards
What are the two imaging modalities for the cardiovascular system?
Radiography and ultrasound
What are the imaging modalities for the respiratory system?
- Radiography (plain and fluoroscopy)
- Ultrasound
- Endoscopy
- MRI
- CT
- GFR
Fluoroscopy- a moving radiograph
What is lateral recumbancy?
Patient laying on the right hand side
Where would you centre the beam to view the heart?
Around the 5th rib
What is collimation?
Focusing the beam
What is ventrodorsal view better for?
Better for viewing lungs as the diaphragm is relaxed
What is the dorsoventral view better for?
Better for viewing the heart as the patient is less stressed
Where does the heart lie approximately?
It lies between the 3rd and the 6th intercostal space
In a lateral view what percentage of the thoracic cavity should the heart take up?
dorsal to ventral
around 70%
2.5-3.5 ICS dogs 2-2.5 ICS cats
In a VD or DV view what percentage of the thoracic cavity should the heart take up?
in terms of width
60-65%
What should the approximate diameter of the aorta be?
approximately the height of the adjacent vertebra
where should the centre of the beam be collimated during dorsoventral recumbancy?
between caudal aspects of the shoulder blades (6th vertebrae)
Where should the centre of the beam be collimated during ventrodorsal?
mid thorax on sternum.
What is the division of the lung lobes?
Cranial lobe is divided into cranial and caudal parts
(left)
Right is divided into cranial, caudal, middle and accesory
left and right lungs lie either side of the mediastinum
What is Rhinoscopy?
Endoscopy view of the tracheal passages
